Don Luehrs’ Weather Blog – September 3, 2009
Tropical Storm Erika is weak and disorganized today. Winds are only 40 mph as of the 11am advisory. The poorly defined center was near 16.9 north and 63.5 west, or about 100 miles ESE of St. Croix. Movement was to the WNW at 8 mph, and it is expected to continue in this general direction with a gradual increase in forward speed for the next few days. The shear we talked about yesterday is still working against Erika gaining strength, and it is expected to weaken Erika even more in the days ahead. If this idea pans out, Erika will diminish to just a tropical wave again. It will still need to be watched, as even if this does happen, regeneration down the road is a possibility.
Elsewhere, a strong new disturbance is coming off the coast of Africa. I’ll keep and eye on that system, too.
This blog is mainly intended to pass along my thoughts on the tropics each day as we go through hurricane season, but I would be happy to comment on any of your weather related questions. Feel free to shoot me an email at donradio@bellsouth.net. I’ll try to respond to as many as possible in this blog each day.
I want to encourage you to take advantage of Weather Awareness School, a free pubic speaking and weather safety training service. Through Weather Awareness School, I offer school classrooms, church groups, civic clubs and other community groups free talks on weather and weather safety. If you would like me to come and speak with your group, just go to www.weatherawareness.com to get more information and to contact me. I also produce a companion television show on Time-Warner Cable throughout Dillon and Marion counties on Home Town TV 8 called “Weather Awareness”. Weather Awareness School is made possible through the support of my sponsors, and I would like to thank them. They include Hulon Jewelers in Marion, Physicians Healthcare of Dillon, Pee Dee Home Medical Supply and Pharmacy in Dillon, Hayes Landscaping and Nursery in Latta, and Qantum Communications of Florence, home, of course, of six great radio stations serving the Pee Dee, including this one
